US Air Force Awards $14.9M Contract to Capella Space for Radar Imaging

Capella Space Bags Big Contract

Capella Space, based in San Francisco, has landed a $14.9 million deal from the U.S. Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) for radar services.

This company uses SAR technology for capturing clear images of Earth, no matter if it’s cloudy or night-time.

The contract, which will run until December 2026, involves integrating Capella’s radar data into AFRL’s experimental cloud platform for satellite tasking and imaging tests.

“We’re interested in working with commercial satellite companies across multiple phenomenologies to understand their capabilities and military utility,” said Alexander Duchane, an engineer at AFRL, on Aug. 1.

AFRL, located at Kirtland Air Force Base, noted that this agreement is part of a funding program aimed at supporting small businesses in research and development.

Capella Space, started in 2016, is looking to grow its presence in the defense industry.

I think it’s cool how small companies can make such a big impact.
